Betty Jean Kirchner, 95, of Sterling passed away on Wednesday October 9, 2024 at CGH Medical Center. Betty was born August 15, 1929 in Bridgeport, IL, the daughter of Ellis and Clara (Dolby) Palmer. She married Harry Kirchner on November 10, 1951 in Oblong, IL. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2018.
Betty began her teaching career in Sterling as a kindergarten teacher at Woodlawn School. She spent the next 25 years in the field of education as an elementary PE instructor at the various schools and after retirement, as a substitute teacher and classroom aide. Betty and her husband, Harry enjoyed their free time traveling, fishing, playing tennis and camping. She was an avid reader and bridge player. Her Christian faith was important in her life and served the lord through her church and community activities. Betty loved her family and was so proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They brought her so much joy.
Survivors include two daughters Deborah (Lyle) Stern, and Cynthia (Dean) Book both of Sterling; four grandchildren Greg (Lisa) Stern of Madison WI, Michael Stern of Sterling, Dustin (Laura) Book of Lombard IL, and Seth (Erin) Book of Sterling; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was also preceded in death by her parents; and four sisters Marcella Holtz, Ruby Greenlee, Maxine Cummins, and Beulah Rister.
Funeral services will be11 AM Monday October 14, 2024 at the First Christian Church, with pastor Zach Mapes, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at church from 10AM-11AM. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Oak Knoll Memorial Park, Sterling.
A memorial has been established.
