Donald L. Haag, 100, of Sterling, died Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at his home. Don was born January 25, 1923 to Robert Haag and Ida Black. He married Roberta L. Espy on January 22, 1956 at the United Methodist Church, Dixon. After attending and graduating from Sterling schools, he entered the US Army Air Corps in May 1945 during WW2 and was a first Lieutenant in the 13th Army Air Corps. He then worked for Northwest Airlines as a Flight Navigator. He finished his career as a professional engineer at General Electric in Morrison receiving many patents. Roberta and Don lived in Dixon until the birth of their first child, then moved to Sterling. Don was a Sunday School teacher at Sterling St. Paul Lutheran Church, attended Amazing Grace, Sterling, and sang at music jam sessions at First Open Bible Church, in Rock Falls. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary before Roberta's death on March 22, 2016.
Survivors include one daughter, Deb (Michael) Donoho of Dixon; three sons, Dennis (Joni) Haag of Rock Falls, Ron Haag of Sterling and John (Ann) Haag of Amboy; eleven grandchildren, Erin (Josh) Stroud of Columbia, SC, Beth (Brad) McFalls of Dixon and Calli (Kyle Tuskey) Donoho of Geneva, Justin (Rebecca ) Haag of San Mateo, CA, Sara Williams of Sterling, Faith (Addam) Garcia and Cassie (JD Baker) Haag, both of Rock Falls, Megan Haag of Fort Wayne, IN, and Adam Haag of Manhattan, KS, Miranda Lee and David (Victoria) Haag of Dixon; great-grandchildren, Nicolas Allison, Jase Williams, Meadow Lee, Mackenzie, Micah, Mikael, and Jaxen Stroud, Ryne and Elianna McFalls, Levi McNamara, Sebastien Haag, Genevieve and Gabriel Haag, Damion Garcia, Rayne Lorenzi-Haag, Sage, Bear, and Willow Baker of Rock Falls; and one sister-in-law, Bonnie Dunn of Indiana, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents, brothers Kenneth and Robert Haag and sister-in-law, Peggy.
Funeral service will be 11AM Saturday January 13, 2024 at Schilling Funeral Home and Cremation, Sterling. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service from 10AM-11AM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling.
A memorial has been established to the Honor Flight.
