Fred Gebhardt, a master carpenter and lifelong resident of Sterling, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 7th, 2026 at the age of 83 at CGH Medical Center.
Fred was born on October 3rd, 1942, in Sterling, Illinois to Kenneth and Elizabeth (Rienstra) Gebhardt. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1961 and spent more than 50 years building a reputation as a skilled and respected carpenter. Through Fred Gebhardt Construction, he built apartment buildings, remodeled homes, and helped improve the lives of countless families throughout the Sterling-Rock Falls communities.
A devoted supporter of Sterling Golden Warriors athletics, Fred proudly served as Booster Club President and rarely missed one of his grandchildren's sporting events. His heart forever belonged to the Blue and Gold. He took great pride in cheering on Sterling High School.
Family was the center of Fred's life. The wall of family photographs that filled his dining room was a daily reminder of the people he loved most. He was known for his strong work ethic, continuing to work until the age of 80. Fred was deeply patriotic, proudly flew the American flag, and was an enthusiastic supporter of President Donald Trump.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth & Elizabeth Gebhardt; his brothers Richard, Ray (Nancy), and Jim Gebhardt.
He is survived by his children, Tammy (Mark) Neuhouser of Bloomington, IL, Dana (Troy) Lundquist of Mesa, AZ, Chad (Kelly) Gebhardt of Downers Grove, IL, and Marc (Nikki) Gebhardt of Sterling, IL; and by his ten beloved grandchildren: Aaron (Hope) Neuhouser, Amanda (Brian) Linsner, Dr. Adam Neuhouser, Joseph Neuhouser, Michael Lundquist, Ryan Lundquist, Max Gebhardt, Jake Gebhardt, Macie Gebhardt, Ryan Gebhardt.
Fred will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his pride for his country, his contagious belly laugh & quick wit, and the countless stories he loved to tell about growing up in a simpler, more adventurous time. His legacy lives on in the family that he cherished.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sterling Schools Foundation in Fred Gebhardt's honor.
A graveside service will be held at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 11 AM, west entrance. You may visit www.schillingfuneralhome.com to send condolences.
