Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James “Jim” Mocklin, who passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him.

Jim was known for his strong work ethic, caring heart, and love for the simple things in life. A proud farmer and hardworking man, he spent much of his life helping others, sharing stories, and bringing laughter to those around him. He was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.

Farmer Jim loved the land, the outdoors, and the people around him. He leaves behind countless memories with family, friends, neighbors, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him. His kindness, wisdom, and stubborn strength will never be forgotten.

Jim’s life was a reminder of what truly matters — loyalty, compassion, hard work, and love for family and friends.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Jim was born August 7, 1938, in Rock Falls, the son of Ellis and Erma (Cox) Mocklin. He married Delores “Dee” Maass Mocklin on December 1, 1958. Together, Jim and Dee combined their skills and passion to successfully operate Paradise Acres for 68 years in rural Sterling.

Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Jeffrey) Pontnack of Winchester; his granddaughter, Calista Pontnack (fiancé Tucker Long) of Miami; and his beloved sister, Carol Cobble. He also leaves behind special friends: the Blackburn family, Hillary Burks, Lena Gillihan, Mike Verhulst, and “the lady with the black car.”

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Dee, of Sterling, Illinois; his daughter, Ann (Phil) DeWaele of Walnut; and his aunts, Florence Hullah and Annabel Grove.

The family of James Mocklin would like to thank all of the local farmers and GROWMARK Gold Star FS Lyndon for their quick action in immediately stepping in to help get the 2026 crops planted by Mother’s Day — a Paradise Acres goal for 68 years. In Jim’s words, “Thank you for what you do for me.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Serenity Hospice and Home in honor and memory of Jim.

“Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.”

Funeral services will be 11AM Monday May 18, 2026 at Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation in Sterling, with Brian Vickers of Rock River Christian Center, officiating. Visitation will be the same day two hours prior to the service from 9AM-11AM at the funeral home.
