IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leonard
Staranko
August 7, 1947 – March 17, 2026
Leonard Staranko died peacefully in his sleep in Sterling, Illinois on March 17, 2026. He was born August 7, 1947 in North Charleroi, PA the son of John and Rose (Rutsky) Staranko. Leonard had a long career as a sales manager at Wahl Clipper Corporation in Sterling.
He is survived by children Kelsey (Chad) Stringer of Rock Falls, Peter (Sarah) Staranko of Sterling, and John Staranko of Sterling, fourteen grandchildren Eleuria (Brendan), Rosella, Addison, Eve, Moses, Dylan, Lilian, Ophilea, Samuel, Adelena, Uriah, Viviana, and Zinaida, sisters Alberta (William) O’Brien and Eleanor Custozzo, and brother Robert Staranko. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who love him very much. Len was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John Staranko and Bernard Staranko.
Len graduated from Charleroi High School in 1965. He was a combat veteran in the 101st Airborn Division in the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
Len lived a life characterized by faith, family, freedom, food, and football. He enjoyed regular visits from his children and grandchildren, talking with neighbors, and long phone conversations with friends and family from around the country, as years spent in sales had birthed an aptitude at building connection over the phone. He longed to pass on traditions to his children. In this he was successful, although it was more pleasurable when the Steelers were playing well. He lived a life of generosity and reliance on God’s guidance and provision. He also embodied the value of sacrifice, which was displayed by the choices he made for others, especially his children and their kids. His limited mobility near the end of his life increased his ability to be a prayer warrior, which was another trait honed during long hours on the road over the course of his career.
Len loved Easter and the Lenten season - a time of spiritual reflection and rebirth. It is fitting that he passed during this time, as life is being born anew. He was grateful and overwhelmed by Christ’s sacrifice, and aware of his need for a savior. Scripture states in John 11:25 that Jesus is, “...the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live…” Memorials and celebrations of life will take place later in the year.
