Michael Allen Lancaster, 70, of Sterling, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

   Mike was born May 28, 1956, in Dixon, Illinois, the only son of Allen H. and Betty (Wise) Lancaster. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1974 before attending Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, and Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating in 1981. After passing the bar, Mike began what would become a distinguished legal career with the firm of Besse, Frye, Arnold and Brooks. Over the course of his 38 years practicing law, Mike became an accomplished and well-known attorney throughout northern Illinois. He later became a partner at Miller & Lancaster Law Firm, where he practiced until his retirement in 2019.

   Mike married Beth (Grannan) on June 19, 1982, and together they built a beautiful family and a lifetime of memories. Although they later divorced, they remained an important part of one another’s lives, continuing to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions together as a family.

   Of all Mike’s accomplishments, none brought him greater pride than his family. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Kady (Kevin Popp) Dziudzek and Allie (Mitchel) Johnston, both of Sterling. His daughters meant the world to him, but the true lights of his life were his three grandchildren, Nell, Ruth, and Dean Johnston. Being their poppa brought Mike immeasurable happiness, and the time he spent with them was among his greatest joys.

   Known to many as the “Big Elk,” Mike was larger-than-life and had the personality and unforgettable sense of humor to match. He was the kind of person people remembered, and those fortunate enough to know him will remember his wit, his stories, and the laughter that so often followed him. Whether telling a joke, making a quip, or quoting lines from his favorite movies, whatever Mike said people stopped and listened.

   He enjoyed sports, especially his Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs, as well as reality television, fishing, golf, traveling with his family, and spending time with friends. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the lake in the North Woods of Wisconsin.

   A lifelong learner and devoted trivia enthusiast, Mike rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy! and made a habit of quizzing his family with the Final Jeopardy question each day. He also never met a crossword puzzle he couldn’t solve.

   Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Betty Lancaster, and his best friend, Donovan Robertson.

   Mike leaves behind a life filled with family, friendship, laughter, accomplishment, and countless memories that will continue to be shared by those who loved him.

   His family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Mike’s life at a visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling. Mike was a man who loved color—especially orange—so those attending should not feel the need to wear black. Instead, the family welcomes everyone to come as Mike would have wanted: ready to remember him, share stories, and celebrate a life well lived.

   Private graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.
