Virginia Johnson

Virginia Gayle Johnson, age 78, of Sterling, IL, passed away on Wednesday, May 14th. She was born on June 6th, 1946, in Lincoln, IL to Charles and Mary Jane Anderson.

Virginia grew up in Central Illinois and was involved in many school activities, including the Girl Scouts, where she earned the highest honor, the Gold Award. During her high school years, she developed a passion for helping others and decided to pursue a teaching degree. Virginia followed her dreams and graduated from Illinois State University in 1967. Days later she married Kenneth Johnson on December 21, 1967. Together they built a beautiful life, filled with love, laughter, and many shared adventures in both Sterling and what became their second home in Bradenton, FL.

Virginia started teaching in the Chicagoland area but in 1970, she and Ken moved to Sterling, IL where she began what became a long and impactful education career. She focused her time helping students at Rock Falls High School and Sauk Valley Community College.

A dedicated teacher and school administrator for many years, Virginia touched countless lives with her passion for home economics and sewing. Virginia continued her career as an administrator ensuring all students had equal footing for success.

Virginia's passion for teaching continued in retirement. She focused her time on many projects involving sewing, needle point, and quilting. As one of her greatest talents and hobbies, she taught her students and friends how to turn fabric and thread into treasured heirlooms. Outside of the classroom, she found joy in spending time with her husband, family, and her many cherished friends.

She is survived by her loving children, Darren (Meredith) and Teri (Travis Sr.);grandchildren, Travis, Alex, and Jack and her sister Susan (Carl). 

A memorial service will be held at Schilling Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 27th at 11:00 AM with the visitation starting one hour prior.
