William Ludwig, affectionately known as “Luds” to all his students, died peacefully on November 8, 2025 in Sterling, IL.
A devoted educator and compassionate soul, Luds dedicated his life to teaching, mentoring and serving others. He began his teaching career at Talas American Ortaokulu in Turkey where he inspired countless students with his warmth, humor and passion for learning. Upon returning to the United States, he continued his calling at Erie High School, leaving a lasting impact on both colleagues and students alike.
Even after his years in the classroom, Luds never stopped giving. He spent much of his later life as a para-professional at local elementary schools, where his kindness, patience made every child feel valued. He also devoted countless hours volunteering at the Sterling Care Center and The Second Stage Thrift Store (Self Help) offering companionship and joy to customers and staff.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Luds will remember his gentle spirit, generous heart and unwavering dedication to helping others. His legacy of compassion and selflessness will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
William is survived by his brother, Joe Ludwig (Melinda), his sister, Cindy Brown (Robert) and countless nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his parents, William & Elizabeth Ludwig, and brother, Brad.
A Memorial Service will be 11AM Thursday November 13, 2025 at Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation (702 First Avenue Sterling, IL). A Celebration Of Life will be the same day, two hours prior, from 9AM-11AM also at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established to “Second Stage Thrift Store” and benefits Self Help Enterprises.
