Why a Cremation Service Still Matters

Choosing cremation does not mean giving up the opportunity to honor your loved one with a meaningful service. Cremation is simply the method of final disposition. A funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life provides family and friends with the opportunity to come together, share memories, celebrate a life well lived, and begin the healing process.

For many families throughout Sterling, Rock Falls, Dixon, Morrison, Prophetstown, Polo, and communities across the Sauk Valley, gathering together after the loss of a loved one provides comfort during an incredibly difficult time. It offers a chance to reflect on the moments that made someone special, recognize the impact they had on others, and celebrate the legacy they leave behind.

A meaningful service also creates lasting memories for future generations. Through photographs, favorite music, personal stories, videos, military honors, faith traditions, or other meaningful tributes, families can preserve the unique story of their loved one while strengthening the bonds that continue long after the service has ended.

At Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation, we believe every life deserves to be remembered in a personal and meaningful way. Whether you choose a simple memorial gathering or a fully personalized celebration of life, our compassionate team will help you create a tribute that reflects your loved one's personality, values, and wishes while providing comfort and support for everyone who attends.

Ways to Honor a Loved One After Choosing Cremation

One of the greatest advantages of cremation is the flexibility it offers. There is no single right way to honor a loved one. Instead, families have the freedom to create a service that reflects the life, personality, beliefs, and traditions of the person being remembered.

Some families choose a traditional funeral service with visitation before cremation, allowing family and friends to gather, pay their respects, and celebrate a life well lived. Others prefer a memorial service or celebration of life after cremation, providing additional time for loved ones to travel and participate in the remembrance.

Many families also choose to personalize the experience with meaningful details that reflect what made their loved one unique.

Meaningful options may include:

  • A traditional funeral service followed by cremation
  • A memorial service after cremation
  • A personalized celebration of life
  • A private family farewell or viewing
  • Military honors for eligible veterans
  • Scripture readings, prayers, or other faith-based traditions
  • Photo displays, video tributes, and memory tables
  • Favorite music, hobbies, collections, or personal memorabilia
  • Graveside services or urn burial
  • Scattering ceremonies where permitted by law
  • Permanent memorialization through an urn, cemetery placement, or keepsake memorials

Every family's story is different, and every service should reflect the unique life being celebrated. Our experienced staff will take the time to listen to your wishes, answer your questions, and help you create a meaningful tribute that brings family and friends together while honoring your loved one's legacy with dignity, compassion, and care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cremation Services

  • Can we still have a funeral if we choose cremation?

Yes. Many families choose to have a traditional funeral service with visitation before cremation. This allows family and friends to gather, pay their respects, and celebrate their loved one's life while still choosing cremation as the final disposition.

  • What is the difference between a direct cremation and a memorial service?

Direct cremation takes place without a formal service beforehand. A memorial service is held after cremation and provides family and friends with an opportunity to gather, remember, and celebrate the life of their loved one.

  • Is a memorial service important if we choose cremation?

Many families find that holding a memorial service or celebration of life is one of the most meaningful parts of the grieving process. It creates a time to share memories, support one another, and honor the unique life of the person who has passed away.

  • Can we personalize a cremation service?

Absolutely. At Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation, we can personalize your loved one's service with photographs, video tributes, favorite music, military honors, displays of hobbies or collections, personalized keepsakes, and other meaningful touches that celebrate their life.

  • Can a cremation service include religious traditions?

Yes. Whether your family wishes to include prayers, scripture readings, clergy, military honors, or other religious or cultural traditions, we will help create a service that reflects your family's beliefs and values.

  • When should a memorial service be held after cremation?

There is no required timeline. Some families choose to hold a service within days of the cremation, while others wait weeks or months so relatives and friends can travel. Cremation provides the flexibility to choose a time that works best for your family.

  • What can we do with our loved one's cremated remains?

Families have many meaningful options, including placing the urn in a cemetery, columbarium, or family plot, keeping the urn at home, scattering the cremated remains where permitted by law, or selecting memorial keepsakes to share among family members. Our staff can help you understand each option and choose the one that best reflects your loved one's wishes.

  • Why choose Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation for cremation services?

Families throughout Sterling, Rock Falls, Dixon, Morrison, and the Sauk Valley trust Schilling Funeral Home & Cremation because we provide compassionate guidance, transparent pricing, personalized service options, and the experience needed to help families honor their loved ones with dignity, respect, and genuine care.

Permanent Memorialization

Keeping an Urn at Home

This is a common choice and families can select the perfect urn for their loved one.

Placing the Urn in a Columbarium (aka, a “niche”)

Many families find comfort in having a final resting place that they can visit.

Burying the Urn

Similar to a casket, the in-ground burial of the urn allows for a final resting place.

Scattering of the Cremated Remains

Some families find comfort scattering the cremated remains in a place that was special to their loved one.
